BANGKOK, 27 December 2018 (NNT) - The government has opened a road safety center for the holiday season, with plans to ramp up enforcement should accident numbers fail to fall.

Minister of Interior Gen Anupong Paochinda chaired the opening of the center, which brings together various agencies to reduce road accidents during the holiday season, which runs between December 27th and January 2nd.

Measures include the strict enforcement of traffic laws, including cracking down on speeding, drunk driving and failure to wear helmets, monitoring the readiness of all transportation vehicles, preparing emergency response protocols, inspecting the safety of boats and piers, monitoring popular destinations and conducting blood-alcohol level tests on drivers, with an emphasis on 144 districts nationwide that have historically experienced high accident rates.

The interior minister said the campaign aims to reduce the loss of life and property. However, the most important factor towards reducing accidents is travelers themselves who must adhere to traffic laws and maintain awareness on the road. Should the campaign prove unsuccessful in reducing accident rates, the road safety center will implement additional training for public service vehicle drivers and more severe punishments.

Meanwhile, Deputy Police Chief Pol Gen Srivara Ransibrahmanakul released over 700 police and ambulance personnel to monitor target areas and provide convenience to the public during the New Year holidays. Srivara instructed officials to enforce traffic laws strictly and communicate respectfully with the public when conducting their questioning or searches to avoid disputes.
