BANGKOK, 22 January 2019 (NNT) - Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister, Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, affirmed Thailand’s stance against detaining foreign children in immigration rooms while awaiting deportation, in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Gen Prawit chaired the memorandum signing on measures in place of detaining foreign children while awaiting deportation. The MOU was signed between the Royal Thai Police, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labor, with foreign ambassadors in Thailand including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees witnessing the signing.

The memorandum was the result of the Thai Prime Minister attending the Leaders’ Summit on Refugees in the United States where Thailand vowed not to detain children and to respect the rights of refugee children in line with international principles.

Gen Prawit affirmed that the country will follow through with its declaration and urged related agencies to put the principles into practice, with the National Security Council serving as the main implementation and monitoring body.
