Use "have" in the present tense and when using the present perfect.

Anything in the past, use "had", because "had" is the past tense form of "have."

I know ... very general, but it's a good start.

May I add here?

Verb to Have can be used a State verb or finite verb meaning to own or possess something. E.g. I have 10 B. I had 4 B yesterday.

Have as a modal verb or helping verb to make a Present and Past Perfect Tenses

E.g. I have known K. Andrew for many years.

I had studied English 6 months before I went to Melbourne in 1989.

Hope this helps.
